Decoction (Kadha) : A Herbal Remedi

The decoction is the English word for Kadha.

Creating herbal remedies is not difficult or complicated, it is designed to look just like that. If you can boil water, you can make your own tinctures, infusion, or decoction. In this article, we will discuss decoctions for what they are, how they are prepared, and examples of common decoctions.

Simply put, a decoction is your basic infusion that prompts stubborn roots, bark, and resins to give up their medicinal properties. While most plants produce their properties in cold or boiling hot water within a few minutes, some require more time, such as 30 minutes or more.

While sometimes the whole plant with stem, twig, flower, leaf, and bud is used for special preventive effects, usually only one part of the plant is used at a time. Examples of herbs that work best in decoction include:

Used for shingles, crust, itching, and other skin problems

Comfrey root, decoction makes a good gargle and swelling of the throat, hoarseness, and bleeding gums.

Linseed, this decoction can also be used in coronavirus for cough, chest, and lung problems. Remember to use ripe seeds only because immature seed pods can cause poisoning.

English oak bark, a decoction of the bark can be used internally or externally for hemorrhoids and other rectal problems, menstrual problems, and blood in the urine.

 Preparation:

Fresh herbs must be harvested; Dry herbs must be powered or crushed well. The decoction should always be sieved when heated so that the substance that separates when cooled, re-mixes with the liquid when the remedy is used.

Use glass, ceramic, or pottery when making the decoction. Do not use plain cast iron with astringent plants. Use 1 ounce (30 grams) of dried root or bark over a pint of water. Allow it to boil for at least ten minutes or longer. The mixture is then stacked with a cover over the pot for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. Sieve the parts of the plant before drinking.

Warning: FDA has determined that comfrey pyrrolizidine can cause alkaloids poisoning that causes liver disorders in humans called liver venous-occlusive disease. Small and medium veins are obstructed in the liver, eventually leading to liver dysfunction, cirrhosis, and death. While only 2 deaths attributed to Comfrey have been documented, due caution is indicated.
